Every year close to 800 000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire country and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. Suicide was the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2015.

Suicide does not just occur in high-income countries, but is a global phenomenon in all regions of the world. In fact, over 78% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries in 2015.Suicide is a serious public health problem; however, suicides are preventable with time, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions. .

Those that are not terminally ill, and feel compelled to end their lives, would seem to fall into a two categories, Those that are determined to end their lives, and are not worried about the discomfort or implications of achieving that goal. These people tend to choose more certain methods of suicide like firearms, hanging or jumping.

In the other category are often people looking for a way to end their lives painlessly and peacefully. Those will be the people reading the section on drugs, in the hope they can slip from this world without pain; peacefully. After reading this section of the website, they may well be realising that most drugs are neither painless or peaceful.!

HISTORY OF SUICIDE :

In ANCIENT GREECE, suicide was generally regarded as not wrong in itself, but there had to be a justification for it .

Two  Greek philosophers, Democritus and Speusippus, both committed suicide because of health problems when they were very elderly ( at the age of 90). Then, the Epicureans generally felt that when life became unbearable, suicide was justified. And, they also believed that suicide was permissible, especially if one had an incurable illness

In ANCIENT ROME, there was usually no prohibition of suicide for citizens. However, suicide was forbidden for slaves and soldiers: the former for economic considerations, and the latter for patriotic reasons. Because life was not considered as a gift of the gods, most leading Romans supported the idea of suicide for specific situations, such as individuals preferring death to dishonour, or those who wished to avoid the decrepitude of old age. Seneca, the philosopher and statesman, strongly believed that if being elderly begins to unseat my reason and pull it piecemeal, if it leaves me not life but mere animation, I shall be out of my crumbling, tumble-down tenement at a bound.!

Finally, on the ethics of suicide, it must be noted that suicide is an act, a definite act with very final consequences. Therefore, this act must be looked at differently from some other issues of modern freedoms, or even ideas surrounding the right to die with dignity. Proper, timely death can be an affirmation of the life process. These are the distinctions that the nurturers, and all human beings, must make. If life cannot be easily right or wrong, black or white, it can be a process of thoughtful choices that emphasize the compassionate dignity which humans are capable of…So try to live your life and give a second try..!
